Typically we blog about Visual Art that we can pack in a box and ship around the world but today I wanted to wave the flag for Devon. Last night’s Oscar ceremony saw the success of two Devon born individuals winning the coveted Oscar.

Roger Deakins renowned cinematographer won an Oscar last night for his work on Blade Runner 2049.  Roger has been nominated 14 times previously and has numerous other awards to his name, now he is an Oscar winner.  He was born in Torquay and grew up with a love of Art something that Devon and the South West pride itself on. This we can see through the volume of incredibly talented artists that began their journey in Devon.

Roger Deakins is not the only Devon local to win an Oscar this year, the incredibly talented Maisie Sly from Plymouth whose film The Silent Child won for best Live Action Short film, at the age of just 6 Maisie plays Libby a profoundly deaf four year old girl who is born into a middle class family and lives in a world of silence until a caring social worker teaches her the gift of communication.  A beautiful film which deserves this great success as does Maisie.

It is always wonderful to be reminded of how great Devon is and that we can rival the Hollywood greats with sheer talent and determination.  Well done Roger and Maisie for flying the Devon flag.
